Coach
Just in case some of you did not know, Lindsay is leaving us at the end of the week (20th October) to take up a role with British Swimming in Australia. She will be working ‘Down Under’ at a holding camp for our top swimmers, prior to the Commonwealth Games, to be held in Melbourne next year. We are obviously sad that she is leaving, but understand she could not turn down an opportunity like this. I am sure all at the club would like to thank her for all her work during the year and to wish her well in the future.
To replace Lindsay as Head Coach, we have secured the services of Emma Collings. Emma has been working with us at the club since the summer at Burleigh and some of the Grammar School sessions, so she should be known to some of you already. Emma comes from the University swimming and coaching programme and comes highly recommended by them. She will be at most of the sessions during the weeks ahead, so please make her welcome. There will also be one or two other new faces on the poolside shortly, to add to our band of willing volunteers and helpers.
Charnwood Leisure Centre
We are just about there with our negotiations with the Council and Leisure Centre management regarding the new timetable. We are due to return to CLC in January 2006 and hope to secure additional and more suitable training times (earlier in the evening) at the centre, together with time at Soar Valley as well. Details still have to be agreed, but it’s looking good so far.
AGM
Details of the clubs AGM will be posted on SV notice board soon. It is very important that you all turn up at this meeting, so watch for details coming soon.
Age Groups
The entry forms will be available as from Thursday 20th Oct at Soar Valley. Closing date is just before Christmas and we have everyone’s times if you need help completing the form.
Sponsored Swim
As you may already know, we are helping one of our former swimmers raise some money for the charity SCOPE on Thursday 3rd November at Soar Valley. All the swimmers need to do is pick up a form, get family, friends etc to donate money and then just turn up for your normal session. We will calculate the overall distance swam by our swimmers on the night – it is hoped we can swim a grand total of 166,000 meters in one night. Representatives from SCOPE will be down at SV on Thurs 27th to explain more about the charity and why extra funds are always needed, so please be available to listen to them. Our swimmers then, of course need to collect in the cash by Friday 18th November and return it to the club. All money raised will go towards SCOPE.

We Are Back!
we are back in training, the swimmers have a lot of hard training ahead. I must first apologies for the mess over the summer regarding the Grammar School sessions. All sessions were booked and confirmed well in advance with the school, for all the dates and times, until they got in touch with us on the Friday before the sessions started on the Monday, to say changes had to be made. We contacted a number of people, posted notices on the gate and door of the pool and put a notice on the website, however, I am sure a number of you turned up at the pool without knowing. We are sorry for that, we just did not have the time to let everybody know. For those that paid for a block of sessions and, in the end, did not attend all those you paid for, can you please work out for us what we owe you and we will refund your money.
Welcome
Over the last few months, we have acquired several new members to the club, with swimmers joining at both Soar Valley and L’boro Grammar School sessions. With Lindsay now holding trials at almost any session, this brings in new members every week, if not every day, so on behalf of the club can I welcome you all and I hope this will be the start of a long swimming career with us. Any questions about the club – just ask! Please don’t wait for us.
Goodbye
It’s a goodbye to Rachel Healy who is leaving us soon to go to University in London. Rachel has worked very hard for us over the last few years, on the poolside, with Team Manager duties, with the committee and the Masters. We wish her well in the future, but I’m sure we will see her again soon.
Social/BBQ
Those that attended the BBQ at Rothley Park Cricket Club had great day, enjoyed even more by the beautiful sunshine. Thank you to both the Cooper family and the Cricket Club for helping us put on the BBQ. Medals and certificates were handed out to the triumphant Diddy squad and Sprint Gala swimmers. As we always say at the end of these things, when all has gone well ‘we must do this more often’ - and we should. What is needed is a Social Committee – it doesn’t need one that attends monthly meetings or anything – just a few parents sat around talking, to come up with an idea or two or ten. We don’t need these to make vast amounts of money for us, just a chance to get together, away from a swimming pool. Leave it with you!
Masters
Who knows what this lot have been up to over the summer? I am lead to believe many have been training up at the Uni – whether this is at the pool or in the Students Union Bar - we may never know. Entry forms for the legendary trip to Sheffield for the National Masters in October are now available and accommodation is booked at the normal hotel. Closing date for entries is 30th Sept 2005. See Steve for entry forms or club desk on a Tuesday or Thursday.
Diddy Team
Well done to all members of the Diddy squad who represented the team throughout last season. We have not made the final in many years and you all did very well to get the team there. Many great performances were produced over the three rounds and you should all be very proud of yourselves. Some of you will now be swimming for the senior teams this season and if you swim like you did for the Diddy’s, you will have no problems.
Well done again.
Open Meets
Jayne Smith and Lindsay are looking after these now and it looks like we will be sending more and more of our swimmers to them during the year. Again, notice board, website and club desk on a Thursday are the places to look for the entry forms. The information sheet about galas/open meets will tell you more about this type of competition. There are usually entry times to be met (not in all cases though) and medals or prizes for top finishers in each age group. They are a great way to be part of a good competition, swimming against swimmers of the same age group from all over the country
Galas/Selection
The first gala of the season kicks off with the traditional opener, the Leics ASA Inter Clubs relay gala at Braunstone Leisure Centre. This is where all Leicestershire clubs are attending on one night and is an ideal opportunity to show the other clubs what standard we have reached over the last year. The ladies are in Division 2 and need to gain promotion to join the lads in Division 1, where it is hoped they will stay for another year – No pressure there then! We then move onto a friendly or two before the first round of the Speedo League kicks off at L’boro Uni pool in October. For those of you that are new to the club, all teams sheets are posted on the notice board at Soar Valley a few weeks before each gala and it is your/the swimmers responsibility to tick off and confirm your selection –at no time must you cross off and say you are unavailable – this is against the European Court of Human Rights Policy!
Team sheets are also posted on the clubs website for your information. Also on the notice board and website is a full fixture list, so you have no argument to say you did not know there was a gala on such and such a date. There will be a sheet available very soon indicating all the types of gala we attend throughout the year. This proved valuable last year, especially for new members.
Kit
Order forms are now out for you to purchase new Polo Shirts and Fleeces, bearing the club logo. All sizes are available and cost has been kept to a minimum with the help of S&A Autos, who kindly donated some money towards the set-up costs of the printing. Rachel Healy is looking after the collection of forms and money (until she goes away) and I’m told if you get your order in quick, you may well get them for the gala on 10th Sept. This kind of item of clothing make the club look good on the poolside and can have an effect over the other teams, so can you please try and purchase them.
Coaching
Over the last few weeks and months, following the re-structuring of the groups, many swimmers are now coming to more and more sessions. It is very important to be consistently attending training sessions and this needs to be continued, whilst establishing a routine. Speedo Leagues are fast approaching and we need to extend the success that the Diddy Team had last season to the Senior Teams.
Keep up the good work.
CLC Closure
For those of you that have not seen Charnwood Leisure Centre recently, the work continues (slowly) and we are told that although it may not look as though it is developing on the outside, on the inside, a lot of the construction, pipe work and pool lining has been done. The tiles, windows and general decoration still need to be done and we have been told that it should be ready early in 2006. This is several months overdue from the original estimate, however, according to an earlier edition of LTSC newsletter, we weren’t expected to be back at CLC until then anyway.
In the meantime, we have been asked by Serco/CBC to provide our choice of session timetable for Jan 2006 onwards. This has already been sent to them and is based on the old timetable when we had before at CLC, plus addition time at Soar Valley. The club has done very well out of new members since we have been at Soar Valley and have noted a lot come from the surrounding area and, therefore, want to keep some time there. This new timetable is only a proposal at the moment and is still to be discussed (at length I’m sure) before an agreement is met. Some of the times of sessions may change (for the better we hope) but lets wait and see what is agreed before we confirm anything.

Club Registration
That’s always a good place to start the New Year – in your pocket!
Club fees are due from the 1st January 2005 and forms will be
available when we start back training. There has been no increase to the annual membership fee from last year and it is hoped to have someone available at all the pools during the first few weeks to hand forms out, as well as collecting any money in – we wouldn’t want anyone to miss out now would we! By their own admission, the ASA had problems with their new database last year, so lets hope this year the registration of swimmers and official’s runs a bit more smoothly.
Website
Carl Shaw continues to update the site with more information. We now have maps showing the location of our training pools (for the new members), team selection lists for forthcoming galas and results from previous galas (well, some anyway). If anybody has any swimming related photos that will be suitable for the ‘Gallery’ section, then please see Mark. Please pay the site a visit from time to time and if you have any ideas that will improve the site, then please see Mark or Carl.
Masters
Following the trip to Barnet for the Southern Counties meet, which by all accounts was a success, the squad got ready for the BIG ONE!
The normal large group of party animals, sorry swimmers, went north again to Sheffield for the National Championships to do the club proud. Following the weeks of extensive training sessions, strict diets adhered to and no alcoholic drinks for literally minutes before the racing, the squad once again performed like troopers. Medals galore (well, for Carl Shaw anyway) and PBs were falling by the hour, not to mention Mr Taggart being chased by a ‘Swimming Times’ photographer around the pool prior to his race – not hard to catch by all accounts!
Whilst most of you will be getting over your Turkey or whatever, more of the squad will be going up to Shrewsbury to represent the club at their Masters Meet in early January – good luck to them.
Courses
Funding is available from either the club, Active Sports or Charnwood Sports Council, for any of you that would like to take part in an ASA ‘Swimming Teachers’ or ‘Club Coach’ course. It was hoped to run our own at some point, however, this was not to be, so if there is anybody out there wanting to gain any of these qualifications, please see Mark or Sarah for further details. There is also funding available for those wanting to take part in ‘Officials’ courses as well. It won’t cost you a penny – just your time – and it will benefit you, your kids and the club in the long run. Go on, give it a go!
Committee
The new committee has been formed following the AGM in December 2004. Nice to see some new faces on it and that they are prepared to take on specific roles in the running of the club. More volunteers are needed in this way if we are to continue to improve our SWIM 21 accreditation out of the pool. ‘Volunteering’ is going to be a word used more and more over the coming years, not only by the club but also the ASA. We need more of you to take on roles in the club and you don’t have to be on the committee to do them. We will sit down and let you know what is required shortly – watch this space!
Parents Meetings
With the change over of pools, these Parents Meetings seem to have been forgotten. They were a good way of passing on information and for you to ask questions about the club. Unfortunately, there is no suitable room available for when we want it at Soar Valley, and the other pools do not have the facilities either, however, we will try and come up with something during this year. In the meantime, if there is anything you wish to raise about the club or information you require, please don’t just moan about it to others or even keep it to yourself, please come to the club desk on a Thursday or give Mark a call or email and we will try and resolve the matters.
Age Groups
With these coming in February, it’s now time to get your club T-shirts and caps to wear when representing the club at these Championships. Club shop open on the first Thursday of the month. We once again have a high number of swimmers competing, both at the Uni and the new pool in Leicester. Good luck to all our swimmers taking part and lets try and stamp our mark on these championships even more than last year.
Presentation Evening
Back at Charnwood Bowls Club on Friday 28th Jan. Open to ALL , that’s ALL club members and families. Annual gala trophies to be presented on the night, hopefully, by a Star guest! See Notice board for further details.
Training Sessions
With the exception of the sessions at East Leake Leisure Centre (which didn’t go down well at all) the club is pleased with the overall attendance at all the sessions. Both the Grammar School and Burleigh sessions are now well attended and although the sessions at Soar Valley and Uni are well attended, there is stillroom for one or two more at certain times. At present, the charge for each session will remain at £1.50, however, the committee is monitoring the situation and an increase may occur later in the year. You have been warned! The £1.50 is very cheap in comparison the other clubs and to a regular swim for the public at Leisure Centres.
CLC Closure
For those of you that have been to the Leisure Centre in Loughborough, will have seen that the demolition stage of the pool is well under way.
As far as the club is aware, the re-opening is still on course for late summer 2005. Lets hope so, because we have some galas booked there for later in the year! The pool will remain a 6 lane 25m pool (not deck level), but with new changing facilities and a slightly bigger (we think) seating area. As yet, the club has not sat down with Serco or the Council to discuss our available pool time back at CLC, however, you can be assured this will be done in the not to distant future and you will be informed as soon as it is finalised.
Welcome
There have been lots of new members join us since our move to Soar Valley, many from the immediate surrounding area and some from out of town. James Owens joined us following his family’s move from Derbyshire and most recently, the Watkins family from Essex.
A warm welcome to you all from LTSC.
Club Coach
At the time of going to press (always wanted to say that) we are still in negotiations with a possible future coach to the club. It’s no secret that Lindsay Dunn from L’boro Uni has been down to have a look at our set up and sessions and will continue to do this during the first week of 2005. We will be meeting up with her in early January to move things along and in the meantime, Rachel, Steve and Sarah will continue to set the sessions, ably assisted by the band of teachers and poolside helpers.
Galas/Selection
It has been mentioned a couple of times about team selection for all galas. Firstly, a fixture list is on the notice board at Soar Valley for the whole of 2005 and one will be on the web site in early Jan. This will be added to during the year, as we are invited to more galas – we will not be holding home galas (at CLC) until Oct 2005. The problem we have is that many swimmers represent a number of our teams. Some swim for the Diddy A and also the Senior B and so on, therefore, it is hard for us to inform each individual of what team lists to look out for. Parents of swimmers, especially the younger ones could ask coaches, lane teachers, team managers or even at the club desk, if they are unsure. Team Managers are aware of the problem and will try and get the sheet on the board well before the gala date. In return, will you ensure swimmers either tick or cross their names off, in order that a replacement can be selected OR that the B Team Manager can select his team in good time. We all agree that communication can be improved upon, but lets work together and make it happen. We do not have as many swimmers to call upon as some of the other clubs in the county, so once again, please make yourself available for selection and ensure you confirm your selection on the notice board in good time.

New Timetable/Pools
We know this coming year may mean a few changes for all at the club, what with different pools, training days and times etc, but we hope you will stick with us and once we get into it, we will wonder what all the panic was about. Panic!!… What Panic? The club has come a long way in the last couple of years and it would be a shame to through it all away now. At times it may get a bit full in some of the sessions, but in the end these things normally work themselves out. Spectator viewing at the new pools is VERY limited.
Timekeeping
As both new pools are 4 lanes we are restricting numbers in each lane for safety reasons and so the coaches can coach that lane easily. A maximum of 8 swimmers per lane will be allowed, so anybody coming late may not get a swim in their usual lane – if at all!
September onwards
We have all had a well deserved rest over the last couple of months and we can tell by the numbers returning to training, that you are all ready to get back into some serious sessions. There are plenty of them for you to attend, so please make the most of them, especially the Friday night session at Loughborough University. So what if it’s Friday night…. just go out Saturday night instead….after the Galas though.
Well done to...
The five timekeepers that passed the ASA Timekeepers course recently.
Katie Brewer for her excellent performances at this year’s National Age Groups.
Rachel Healy for passing Club Coach course.>
Teachers Course
This has not been forgotten – just been a bit busy sorting out new pools and training times etc. Hopefully, will get going on it in September and run it later in the year. It will happen…oh yes it will!
Your commitment to the club
If you are a swimming member of this club you make yourself available for team selection at galas. The dates are known well in advance and a copy of the Fixture List is on the notice board. Nobody is bigger than the club and it’s the ones that drop out that let the others down. The coming competition year could be very successful for the club if swimmers train as much as they should and we put out a full strength team each time. With Round 1 of the Speedo League at the University, the Final could be held there, but we need to be in it first. With a full strength team we can be. (Moan over!!)
23/03/04 - Newsletter - Spring 2004
Easter
Please look on the notice board soon for details of any changes to session times over the Easter Holidays. Not too many eggs, hey kids.
Club Fees
If you haven’t already done so, your club/ASA fees are due NOW. Someone is always available at every session at CLC to take your money. The club has until the end of March to collect monies in, sort out paperwork and send a big cheque off to the ASA. We realise the ASA did delay the procedure by not sending out their forms earlier, but they still want it all back by the same deadline date. The club has been invited by the ASA to attend their offices where they are to use all our details, forms and associated paperwork to do with this year’s registration procedure, as their pilot scheme. This may mean we have a say in how the whole system will work in the future for all clubs in the country.
Website
A big thank you to Carl Shaw who has got the club web-site up and running. The site contains lots of information about the club and is updated on a regular basis, with all the results from galas, press reports and photos. Please pay the site a visit on www.ltsc.org.uk Any comments you may have about the site or details you would like to see on there, contact Carl or Mark.
Masters
The squad continues to grow, with new students and some ‘older’ swimmers joining in the fun. In April, a group of 12 or so are to compete in the GB Masters in the Commonwealth Pool in Manchester. Held in the 50m pool, it should prove very interesting for some!! A full social calendar (well, beer and curry) is organised and may be a trip to a ‘club!’ or two. The Masters roadshow will then move onto Leamington in May for the annual trip to see the mad woman at the B+B…..Oh and to do some swimming as well. Steve has the entry forms and Mark is sorting out the accommodation. Well done to the lads that went to Rykneld Masters and bagged some medals – see trophy cabinet.
Courses
Although we are still awaiting confirmation, it looks like Becky Johnson and Rachel Clarke have passed the Swimming Teachers course they recently attended. Held over several full weekends the ladies put in a lot of hard work and have now added to the clubs ever growing list of qualified staff. Well done to you both.
Parents Meeting
Thanks to those that turned up and we hopefully answered some of your queries. These meetings will be held from time to time and is your opportunity to raise any points or ask questions about swimming within the club or even the club itself. The date and time of the next meeting will be displayed on the notice board.
Age Groups
The story so far………we have the fourth highest squad numbers at the championships and are all doing very well. Plenty of PBs – lots in the 50m Uni pool as well, top six placings in age groups for a whole host of swimmers and quite a few coming in the top three, together with one or two who have made the top slot on more than one occasion. Not all results are in yet and there is still some way to go in the Championships, so keep an eye on the notice board for full results.
The results are up-dated on the county web-site www.lasa-results.org.uk after each weekend. Many have qualified for events at the Midland District and National Championships already and I’m sure that list will be added to by the time the Age Groups are over. Please ensure you have all club kit when at these Championships. You are representing LTSC so please show off that fact.
Good luck to all swimmers in the remaining events.
Training Sessions
The list for the next block at the Uni is on the notice board. It takes us up to the end of June (where’s that year gone!) £22.00 for 11 sessions – bargain. If you are unsure of who can attend this session, please see Sarah Brown. We know it’s Friday night, but it is a great session to attend and at fantastic facilities, so get your name down. Sarah reports that numbers are up at all sessions, even the two at the Grammar School on Monday and Wednesday, however, there is still room for a few more yet. A circuits/land training session is almost finalised. This plays a big part in swimmers development – stretching, strength and aerobic exercise – if there is space; even the parents could have a go – what a laugh that will be!
CLC
We are due to meet with Charnwood Borough Council by the end of March to discuss time allocation at Soar Valley. Once this is agreed, we can then look at pool time elsewhere. We have been in contact with management at East Leake Leisure Centre and Burleigh College about pool time there and we also have the option of extra time at the Grammar School as well. Unfortunately, there is no extra pool space at the University. We will keep you informed when we have the details.
Mercury Sports Awards
For those that didn’t already know, the club was nominated in two categories. Mr and Mrs Dickinson in the ‘Contribution to Sport’ and the club itself in the ‘Club of the Year’. We were runner-up in both categories and were ‘Highly Recommended’. See the certificate we received in our trophy cabinet along with our team photo. Those that attended enjoyed the night itself and the club got some excellent publicity out of it, with editorial and photos in the Mercury supplement Here’s to next year!
Welcome
We have recently had many new families and swimmers coming into the club at the early sessions on a Thursday night and this is great news for us. Every week there is more and more turning up for trials, especially following this year’s schools gala held at CLC. Welcome to you all and hope you have a long swimming career at LTSC.

2004 Leicestershire Age Groups
Geoff Cubitt has all the necessary forms for the 2004 Leicestershire age groups and long distance gala. Get them completed and returned before 22nd Jan please.
Welcome
Welcome to the Wildgust family who have recently joined us, and to Liam and Joe who normally train with the Loughborough University squad. They will be helping us on poolside for a few weeks on a Thursday night. This is all part of our continued links with the University squad.
Well Done
Well done to Katie Brewer and Jacolyn Cubitt for recording Midlands District qualifying times at a meet in Nuneaton.
Swim 21
As you will already know by now, we achieved Swim 21 status in November. We are the first club in Leicestershire to do this and we should all be very proud of ourselves.; No rest though, we now need to implement various items within our files and then move onto improving still further, in order for us to go for the GOLD award (sometime in the next 18 months - hey Jim!)
Training Sessions
Numbers are increasing in nearly all our sessions, which is very encouraging for the whole club. The two sessions that Sarah has noticed we needed some change are the ones at the Grammar School. Changes will be made almost immediately to these sessions, with more lanes being made available for a 'normal' session on a Monday for Groups 1 and 2 (limited space), whilst still giving a technique session for the younger ones. We are also looking for lifeguards for these sessions - check the notice board. There is still room for more swimmers in the Wednesday session and please try to commit to the Uni on a Friday. 50m training will do our swimmers a world of good. It's available all next year so put your name down on the list.
Christmas/New Year
Please read the notice board and pick up a leaflet from the desk on a Thursday for all closing and opening dates/times for the verious pools. Yes, we all need a break, but competition starts early in the new year, so it's back to training on the 4th Jan at CLC.
Social
The highly successful Presentation Evening returns on Sat 24th Jan at the Quality Hotel. Full details are on the notice board as we speak, so get your name down early. This event is for ALL club swimmers, members and their families, NOT just for trophy winners. Rooms are available, at a very reasonable rate, at the hotel, should you wish to stop over, on the night. This type of event is not put on to raise funds - the money charged is just to cover the costs.
Club Fees
The prices for club membership for 2004 are now displayed on the notice board. With the new policies imposed on us by the ASA coming into force in the new year, the total cost is slightly higher than in previous years. We do realise that January is quite expensive for us all, what with these membership fees, Presentation Evening and Uni training to pay, but unfortunately that's just how it falls.
Masters
Our annual trip up north for the Nationals was another success for the ever growing (in numbers) Masters squad. Medals galore, well a few anyway and an excellent social calendar made for a good weekend. Some are off to Shrewsbury (wherever that is) at the very beginning of January, so no beers on New Year's Eve for them then!!
Don't forget, the Tuesday 9-10pm session is ideal for all your Masters training needs.
If you want to get involved in Masters swimming, please get in touch with Mark Fritch or Steve Conway (See the 'Contacts' page).
Courses
We have committed ourselves in SWIM 21 to get more people qualified within the club. We will be running out own Timekeepers course shortly, so watch the notice board for those details. Existing timekeepers should be looking to become judges and judged to become referees. We will need to progress in this way, if we want the club as a whole to move onward and upward.
Sponsorship
We have had three Gala sponsors during the year and are looking for more during 2004. The extra money helps with the fundraising of galas, which get very expensive due to pool hire/lifeguard cost for 3 or more each time. Anybody wanting to help out in this way should see Mark Fritche, who will ensure your company name, is included in the media reports and over the PA system at the gala.
Annual Gala
A very high turn out this year, especially from the younger ones, many of whom swam events they had not swum before. Well done to you all. There seemed to be good atmosphere on the night with everyone enjoying themselves. Plenty of gala records broken, PBs and personal triumphs. Thanks to all the officials and organisers, without whom.....etc. etc.
Recent Form
The club continues to improve at almost every meet. Senior A made the Division 2 final, Senior B doing very well in the Leicester League against some A teams, Young Teams squad maintained their Division 1 status and Annual Gala record broken left, right and centre. This is contributing to the high moral around the club. Keep up the hard work - it will pay off in the end.
Volunteers
I know we keep banging on about more volunteers needed, but... we still need more helpers around the club. Whether it's on the poolside at training, at galas, helping with the admin side or going on courses, we still need more help. If you can assist please make yourself known.
CLC Closure
The closure of Charnwood Leisure Centre is still planned for September (ish) 2004. It is then intended to move some or all of our sessions to the new leisure centre at Mountsorrel. We plan to keep any disruption to a minimum, but there will be changes, I'm sure. Some sessions may be moved to other pools around the area - at this stage we don't know. We are in regular contact with the council and Centre Management and we will keep you informed as soon as we have any information to give. It may be in January 2006 before we are back at CLC after the refurbishment.
